Traveling: Leaving the Home

Getting on an airplane is always exciting
We already know the basics of traveling but when we leave our home we must make sure everything is in order. If you wish to enjoy your trip to the fullest with minimum worries about people and things you leave behind, you should take precautions that will insure their safety and well-being.
The most obvious precautions is if you have children and who to leave them with. If you have already made plans to leave them with relatives or members of the family then you shouldn't have any problems while you are away. If you don't have anyone reliable it is your responsibility to find someone to care for them while your on your trip. Rules should be laid down, especially if they are teenagers, about the hours they need to be home, what they are allowed or forbidden to do, and with whom they can go out with. Even if members of the family are taking care of your children make sure that they don't have more liberties while your away. If a non-member of the family is watching over your children make sure to meet with them a few days before you leave to get a sense of who they are to make sure they are responsible to watch over your children.
Before leaving the home make sure to have a list of addresses at which you may be reached and also a list of those relatives or friends who can be reached in case of an emergency. If there are any appointments that must be attended while your on your trip let the sitter, relative or family member know. If these matters are taken care of then there is no reason to be concerned about your family while your gone.

A light timer is a good thing to have when you're going to be away for a period of time.

On the other hand, if no one is left in the home there are a different set of precautions to consider. A house whose owners are obviously away is an open invitation to a burglar. In order to make your home appear occupied the following suggestions should be followed. Don't forget :
- Be sure to cancel any consistent delivery such as the newspaper.
- Request that the post office either hold or forward your mail.
- Have all laundry and cleaning delivered before you leave so it isn't hanging for days or weeks.
- Leave a light or two burning, or install an automatic light that goes on at dusk.
- Check all locks and windows and make sure to take the key with you.
- Leave a spare key with a friendly neighbor or family member to check up on the house occasionally.
- Have your neighbor or relatives water any plants you might have in your household.
- Take pets to the veterinarian's or wherever they are to be left.
- Notify the police of your absence, and ask them to watch over your house.
- Notify the police of anyone that is permitted into your house while your gone.
There is no way to make your home a hundred percent burglarproof, but at the same time all the above suggestions will help to discourage any burglars. If you travel frequently and wish to go away feeling as confident as possible that everything will be in order on your return make a list of the above suggestions that apply to your home and check each one off carefully before every trip.
