Etiquette: The Theatre

The Basics: The Theatre

People have been going to the theatre since Ancient Greece

In my opinion, at one point in our lives we should all go to the theater.  It might not be everyone’s cup of tea, I’m sure, but it provides millions all over the world, great entertainment. No I’m not talking about the pictures (movie theaters) but the theatre for plays, musicals and Broadway shows. There are certain rules of etiquette that must be followed when attending such events.

Two Things

First

Turn off the phone, silence, vibrate - whatever you have to do not to be heard, do it!

Second

Make sure you are not late!

Arrival

When arriving to the theater the host or hostess holds the tickets so the ticket-taker may see them, but should allow their guests to pass ahead of them. At the head of the aisle, if there is an usher, you give them the stubs and step back for the ladies to proceed down the aisle. However, if the usher is already part way down the aisle then the host may lead the way until they reach the usher. If there is a large party then it is wise for the host or hostess to her guests in the order they should sit so that there is no confusion when they reach their seats.

Seating

Gentlemen should sit on an aisle seat; remember that a lady never sits on the left of a gentleman. Make sure to NOT be late! Nothing is so unfair to others who are keen about whatever it is you are seeing as to make them miss the beginning of a performance because of your selfishness in being late. If there is someone sitting behind you and you are wearing a hat make sure to take it off before the opening scene. Getting to or leaving your seat say, “Excuse me, please” when having to disturb anyone in a theater or any other place. If someone is obliged to get up to let you pass thank them or say "I'm sorry". Even though most theater audiences are made up of mature people genuinely interested in the performance make sure to be quiet during the performance. When the performance is over the man on the aisle, or nearest the aisle naturally stands for a moment so that the lady who follows can walk in front, if more people are with you let them pass as well.
