Etiquette: Sporting Events

The Basics: Sporting Events

The American culture has naturally increased its interests in sporting events overtime. Baseball is Americas national sport and favorite past time. Other sports such as football, basketball, soccer, among others have all become integral parts of American life. Therefore, there is that fanatical vibe at sporting events. But one must not forget proper etiquette.

There are few rules other than those of ordinary courtesy. You must arrive on time so that you most importantly don’t disturb others in reaching your seat and for not missing a critical part of the game. You’re expected to cheer and shout for your team or your favorite player but don’t revile the opposing team. You don’t want to attract attention to yourself from your neighbor cheering on the opposing team and possibly getting into a physical confrontation with them.

HBO's Entourage: Don't be an Ari Gold, refrain from jumping and blocking other's views

You’re expected to cheer and shout for your team or your favorite player but don’t revile the opposing team. You don’t want to attract attention to yourself from your neighbor cheering on the opposing team and possibly getting into a physical confrontation with them.  In one of the episodes of the HBO TV hit series Entourage, Ari Gold played by Jeremy Piven had floor seats to a Los Angeles Lakers Basketball game. He stood up at a moment of crisis during the game and the gentleman two rows behind him yelled, “Down in front!” in which Ari responded, “I paid two grand for these seats, I’ll go out there and launch a three if I want! The people behind you at sporting events are interested too, so try to refrain from jumping even if it is a highlighted moment. If possible, leave very young children at home as they would lose interested very quickly at a long game, spectators around will not appreciate repeated requests for occasional trips to the restroom, candy, ice cream, soda, etc.
