Black Friday Brings a Stampede and a Death at Wal Mart

What is this world coming to???
The New York Times reported that a Wal-Mart worker died after being trampled when hundreds of shoppers smashed through the doors of a Long Island store Friday morning, police and witnesses said. The 34-year-old employee, a temporary maintenance worker, tried to hold back the unruly crowds just after the Valley Stream store opened at 5 a.m. Witnesses said the surging throngs of shoppers knocked the man down. He fell and was stepped on. As he gasped for air, shoppers ran over and around him.
"He was bum-rushed by 200 people," said Jimmy Overby, 43, a co-worker. "They took the doors off the hinges. He was trampled and killed in front of me. They took me down too...I literally had to fight people off my back."
The throng of Wal-Mart shoppers had been building all night, filling sidewalks and stretching across a vast parking lot at the Green Acres Mall in Valley Stream, N.Y. At 3:30 a.m., the Nassau County police had to be called in for crowd control, and an officer with a bullhorn pleaded for order.Tension grew as the 5 a.m. opening neared. Someone taped up a crude poster: “Blitz Line Starts Here.”
By 4:55, with no police officers in sight, the crowd of more than 2,000 had become a rabble, and could be held back no longer. Fists banged and shoulders pressed on the sliding-glass double doors, which bowed in with the weight of the assault. Six to 10 workers inside tried to push back, but it was hopeless.
Suddenly, witnesses and the police said, the doors shattered, and the shrieking mob surged through in a blind rush for holiday bargains. One worker, Jdimytai Damour, was thrown back onto the black linoleum tiles and trampled in the stampede that streamed over and around him. Others who had stood alongside Mr. Damour trying to hold the doors were also hurled back and run over, witnesses said.Ugly shopping scenes, a few involving injuries, have become commonplace during the bargain-hunting ritual known as Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving. The nation’s largest retail group, the National Retail Federation, said it had never heard of a worker being killed on Black Friday.
Wal-Mart declined to provide details of the stampede, but said in a statement that it had tried to prepare by adding staff members. Still, it was unclear how many security workers it had at the Valley Stream store for the opening on Friday.
Why do the stores have to open so early? Most of them give stuff away, in effort to get customers in their store first. WHY? If they purposely create these mob scenes, they MUST BE HELD RESPONSIBILE. They must have security and control if they create this chaos. If they invite this behavior, they must be equipped to deal with or pay the consequences. WAL MART should be held responsible and sued to pay dearly for this.

This is why I asked Derrick to publish this for me - I want him to bring attention as how people's action can cause, in this case, death.
How can someone in today's day and age contribute to such a thing? It's inexcusable.
Thank you for posting this, on my blog, Derrick.

The absolute horror of this poor man's death caused by greed and the lynch mob mentality of these shoppers should not go unpunished.
Thank you Tybee for your kind comment. The more I think about it, the more I can't wrap my brain around how something like this could happen in this day and age. It's unbelievable, inexcusable, and primitive. And no one stopped, people where STEPPING on a human being to get into a WAL-MART!!! Again, sadness. I can't imagine the poor family of the one who was killed.
You are certainly welcome. It is astonishing to me that this has already been forgotten here in the States!. I shudder to think what our future holds if this inhumanity becomes de rigueur or common place.
I don't know if it has been forgotten, I think other things are taking center stage. I for one didn't forget about it and I have to have faith in the human race that occurrences like this will NOT be more common in the future. If it is, then, it will be the fall of our society as we know it. If Acts like this were to be a common, other things as well that would destroy our society would be just as normal.
Well thought out and said. I pray you are correct. I will continue to do my part my part in living by example.
On another note, I have had the opportunity to read over your website. What a highly civilized and passionate man you are. It is refreshing to read your thoughts and see your world travels through your eyes. You differ greatly from the majority of sight-seers and tourists, Most travelers conduct themselves as if they were going to the zoo, when visiting other countries. You on the other hand, take that travel experience to a heightened level of cultural awareness and a reverent sense of history and respect for your destinations. I applaud your sensibilities!
